GRovers Activities

GRovers is an active crew. That is, we do lots of activities - which is partly the reason for our success. Hardly a weekend goes by when there isn't something on. Members are usually full of activity ideas, and most of these ideas come to fruition.

This page describes some of the annual and major activities we do.

Annual GRovers Activities

GRovers Annual Not the Yorkes Camp

This camp is held on the May Long Weekend (Adelaide Cup) every year. Usually it is a standing camp, with day activities. And we never hold it at the same place twice. Originally, this was to be "The Yorkes Camp", that is, it was to be held on Yorke Peninsula each year. In fact, the first camp in 1997 was held as a district camp for Venturers on Yorke Peninsula. However, the following year we moved the camp the week before it happened, and since then, it's been "Not The Yorkes Camp". Staring in 2006, the Adelaide cup has moved to March, so this is no longer a regular annual tradition. Other camps and hikes may arise to replace it!

Progressive Dinner

For those who don't understand what a Progressive Dinner is, here's an explanation: A Progressive Dinner is a meal, usually Dinner, which moves locations each course. That is, Soup is served at one place, followed by Entree at another place, then Main course, and Dessert, finishing with Coffee and Cake. The number of courses is variable. Our Progressive Dinners are held annually, originially in August, but now in October/November.

Christmas Dinner

Another Annual Activity we have is a Christmas Dinner - with a difference. The Location is usually somewhere "strange". But it's a good excuse for a party to see the year out. Held in December, of course.

Cocktail Party

The first was so good, we decided to have another! This event, strictly for over 18s only, is now held annually in April. We dress up in our suits and evening dresses, and decorate the den, then partake in the wide variety of flavoured drinks available.

Rover Competitive Hike

Due to the cancellation of some State Rover events (because of insurance costs, etc) GRovers decided to 'resurrect' the long-dead Rover Competitive Hike in 2003, this time following a format similar to Rogaines.

And More...

Another Annual Event, run by Bloo Rovers, is the Anzac Day Netball Challenge, taking place (of course) on Anzac Day, April 25th or thereabouts. It's great fun and we encourage ALL other Rover crews to take part... mainly because we need the challenge ;p

GRovers are also fairly big with canoeing and kayaking. Among many other events, we won first place in the 1999 Duke of Edinburgh 24 Hour Canoe Challenge. Some of our members were in the winning team of the 2000 Challenge, and the GRovers team managed fourth place. We also have competed in the Murray 200, which is a 200 km Canoe Race along the Murray River. You can also read about our Gourmet Canoe Trip. Look out for more canoeing by GRovers in future!

NONT (Night Observation Navigational Tour) is a Branch Rover Event ran by the winning Crew from the previous year. It's a car rally held at night, and it's themed! GRovers try to enter a car each year, and here's our results so far:
